- Maternal nutrition during pregnancy has important implications for optimal fetal development, pregnancy outcome, and ultimately the long-term health of the offspring. Indeed, maternal malnutrition is associated with intrauterine growth restriction leading to low birth weight, while maternal over-nutrition during pregnancy increases the likelihood of an obese baby. In addition to the role of macronutrients (glucose, amino acid and lipid, etc), micronutrient deficiency in utero also leads to impairment of fetal development. Such alterations during this critical developmental period create sufficient risks for lifelong adiposity, type-2 diabetes, hypertension, as well as some other chronic diseases, in the progeny. The programing of fetal development by maternal nutrition depends on the modulation of placental function, in particular placental nutrient transfer capacity, through effects on the endocrine system or epigenetic regulation of gene expression.
